Overall, eurypterids may not be around today for scientists to analyze their ancient past, but these creatures still serve a practical purpose even in their fossil form. Eurypterids are useful as index fossils, because of their widespread existence and eventual widespread extinction. In other words, the fact that they were so prominent and were wiped out quickly helps scientists date other fossils and rock layers found near eurypterid remains.
